Privacy settings that change something, and the ones that only feel like they do

Most privacy advice fails because it treats every toggle as equal. Turning off ad personalization changes which ads you see. It doesn't stop the data collection behind them. Denying an app location access does stop it reading your GPS, but your photos may still carry location details in their metadata unless you strip them.

This section tests settings against a simple question: after you flip it, what does the company stop storing, and what does it keep? We cover phones, browsers, smart assistants, email, cookie banners and the new AI features that want access to your messages and files.

The goal isn't to disappear. It's to make choices with an accurate picture of the trade. Sometimes the convenient setting is worth it. You should just know what it costs.
